THROUGH THE EYE PIECE
This project is a collection of documents, film material, photographs and written information regarding the life and works of the prominent Argentinian scientist Eduardo Patricio de Robertis. This research was sponsored by the Federeration of European Neuroscience Societies and the History of Neuroscience Project.

De Robertis
and the Electron Microscope
With the development of new technologies in the field of cellular biology and microscopy, new advancements were made in the comprehension of the molecular basis of cell communication, and particularly in the understanding of synaptic transmission in the nervous system.

De Robertis pioneered the use of electron microscopy for the study of the ultrastructure of the synapse and contributed to discoverer the synaptic vesicles in pre-synaptic terminals, key elements in synaptic communication. The work of De Robertis boosted the development of Argentinian neurosciences and the establishment of a Latin American school of microscopy that formed many professionals in the medical and biological sciences.

De Robertis
and the "General Citology (Citología General)"
Citología General, published for the first time in 1946, is still, after more than 70 years, a classic title in the health and the biological sciences education curricula. Many editions followed years after having been translated different languages such as portuguese, italian, japanese, russian, polish, hungarian among others.

The title of the book has also changed with the years; being originally published under "Citología General", in 1965 was released under the name of "Biología Celula"; Since 1981 it has been published as "Biología Celular y Molecular"; these changes may also reflect the ability of the authors to adapt to the new advances in the biomedical sciences and having to adapt the contents to the new discoveries and paradigms in the everchanging field of biology.

De Robertis arrived in Montevideo in 1949 and stayed there until 1957, year in which he decided to return to Argentina. During his stay in Montevideo he set out the goal of organizing and put together a functional laboratory for the study of the cell's ultrastucture. At the same time he found of vital importance to educate and train young investigators in the submicroscopic structure of the nervous system. De Robertis, by the end of 1949, was appointed Director of the Cell Ultrastructure Department at the Institure of Biological Sciences in Montevideo.

"Gente" Magazine, 1969
De Robertis scientific success was not only noticed by the international community, which acknowledged his break-through in many ways, but it was also pointed out by the Argentinian society. In 1969 "Gente" Magazine published the list of the most influential figures of year 69'; and there he was, the man of science, surrounded by musicians, writers, pilots, dancers and comedians; Eduardo De Robertis was not only a well-known Argentinian doctor and biologist, but represented the advancement of Argentinian sciences, a symbol of what Argentinians can do with hard work and talent.
